Item No. 13
"El Chaneque" by Angelica Vasquez
This sculpture El Chaneque was interpreted by internationally famous ceramist
Angelica Vasquez. Angelica grew up in and currently resides in the village of Atzompa
which is famous for its pottery. Her work is in many major folk art collections and is
featured in the book Oaxacan Ceramics: Traditional Folk Art by Oaxacan Women
(Chronicle 2003). She has been invited to museums and galleries throughout the
United States and Europe to exhibit her work.
The work offered for sale this evening is typical of Angelica's work. She frequently
reaches into Zapotec and Mixtec mythology for inspiration. The Chaneque is a demon that
will take a person's spirit when they are frightened. The curandero or healer (figure with arms
opened wide) must make a pact with Chaneque to insure that the person's spirit is returned.
