A five-month 46-piece exhibition, “Oaxacan Popular Arts in the New Millennium: Nurturing Young Artists” featured the works of young artists selected as winners and those who were awarded honorable mention. Also included were two works by masters in the contest’s five categories of folk art. This exhibition was on display at the Museo Estatal de Arte Popular Oaxaca (MEAPO, State Museum of Popular Art of Oaxaca) from October, 2008 through March, 2009. Many of the works were purchased by FOFA for MEAPO’s permanent collection.
EXHIBITION OPENING
The opening of the exhibition on October 25, 2008 was a great success. Each artist was called up to the podium to be honored and given two personal copies of the exhibition catalogue. The thrill experienced by these young artists who – for the first time – saw themselves and their work recorded in a book was deeply moving. The Oaxaca State Philharmonic regaled all present with an outstanding concert. In the months following the opening, the museum had a record attendance, totaling over 800 visitors.
