Ana Karen, who received honorable mention in FOFA’s 2008 young artists’ competition, continues a family tradition that can be traced back to her great-grandparents. The piece she entered, “Mezcal Jug,” was burnished with quartz and decorated with poinsettias, her favorite flowers, which she occasionally blends with animals. She formed the carvings, decorations and cutouts of this work with tools that she created herself. Ana Karen noted that to do excellent work, she needs to be relaxed and calm.
