Cesar Rodríguez Zárate (Oaxaca City)

Cesar specializes in “Milagros,” charming folk art charms in silver that present an individual’s personal, spiritual belief that miracles – including small, every miracles – can occur. They range from body parts to animals to human figures. In addition to creating jewelry (e.g., necklaces and bracelets) incorporating “milagros,” Cesar produces Yalalag crosses originating in the Sierra de Juárez and predating the Conquest. These consist of a central cross from which three lesser crosses are suspended, a typical Zapotec style with cosmic, social and theological significance. He also oversees the jewelry workshop of “La Casa de las Artesanías” in Oaxaca City.
