If getting folk art home is of high priority, it is best to arrange your itinerary to return home directly from Oaxaca. This greatly facilitates getting your treasures home by packing them in – and/or as—your luggage. Success in getting your treasures home in great shape is entirely dependent upon the quality of the packing. There are a number of excellent packers whose fees are extremely reasonable; they can pack items into luggage that you will check.
By contrast, shipping, which is also easy to arrange, is typically far more expensive.
You needn’t worry about customs, since folk art is not dutiable.
