FRIENDS OF OAXACAN FOLK ART (FOFA) sponsors a cultural/fundraising tour
to EL MAESTRO FRANCISCO TOLEDO: ART FROM TOLEDO, 1959-2006
Princeton University Art Museum
Saturday, December 1, 2007
Francisco Toledo, a native Zapotec son and resident
of Oaxaca City, wears many remarkable hats. He is Mexico's most
famous contemporary artist whose work is exhibited all over
the world, as well as an intellectual, cultural and moral leader
of
his people. He has most generously and creatively spearheaded
a wide range of conservationist, educational and political causes
(an art school, a recycled paper factory, a library, an organic
market, a botanical garden, a modern art gallery, a photographic
gallery, preventing the installation of McDonalds in Oaxaca's
zocalo, to name a few).
Seminar Leader
Our lecturer, Graciela Kartofel, an internationally-known
art historian, independent curator, critic, and faculty lecturer
specializes in contemporary Latin American art. She is an expert
on Toledo's many facets who will provide invaluable background
to this gem of an exhibit, enlivening Toledo's artistic
and social contributions, as well as his connection to Oaxaca's
folk art traditions.
