Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art (FOFA) seeks to preserve and promote the rich folk art traditions of Oaxaca, Mexico, which have been passed on from generation to generation, often over hundreds of years. Today, these traditions are endangered by economic challenges in the region that significantly impact the folk art community.

Oaxacan folk art photo exhibition in process on instagram

Have you visited our Instagram photo exhibition “Oaxacan Folk Artists in the Time of COVID-19” which launched on July 1? Click here!

The COVID-themed works of three additional artists are being posted every day, through mid-August, expertly curated and prepared by FOFA's art photographer, Otto Piron.

137 (out of a possible 165) artesanos who are winners/honorable mention recipients in FOFA-MEAPO’s five contests for young folk artists (2008, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2018) are featured in this exhibition. Images of their artwork and poetic written descriptions conveying their experience of the pandemic are on view. Information for contacting artists to purchase their work is provided as well. Each participant was awarded 3,000 Mexican pesos (approximately $140 USD).

fofa launches fundraiser for an online catalog of this exhibition

The catalog is intended as a marketing tool for the artists and will be accompanied by information potential buyers need to make direct purchases from the artists, including contact information, packing, shipping considerations, and payment arrangements. In addition, the catalog will create a historical record of the artists' experience of the pandemic. Please click here to donate!
